2009 ASME Conference in San Diego, CA

August 30th to September 2nd, 2009: Prof. Robert Parker and three students from the dynamics and vibration lab attended the 2009 Design Engineering Technical Conference and Computers and Information in Engineering Cnference held in San Diego, CA. Prof.  Robert Parker presented three papers: Structured Eigensolution Properties of Planetary Gears with Elastically Deformable Ring Gears, Vibration of Planetary Gears with Elastically Deformable Ring Gears Parametrically Excited by Mesh Stiffness Fluctuations, and Nonlinear Resonant Vibration of Counter-Shaft Gears with Fluctuating Mesh Stiffness. Other presentations include Computational Nonlinear Vibration Analysis of Gear Pairs Using a Three-Dimensional Model and Vibration Modes of Helical Planetary Gears by Tugan Eritenel, A Frequency Domain Finite Element Approach for Three-Dimensional Gear Dynamics by Chris Cooley, and Dynamic Modeling and Analysis of a Planetary Gear Involving Tooth Wedging and Bearing Clearance Nonlinearity by Yi Guo.

Prof. Robert Parker was awarded by ASME for his outstanding and distinguished service to the colleagues in the society as Associated Editor of Journal of Vibrations and Acoustics from 2003 to 2009.

Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence Review

April 3rd, 2008: Three students from the Dynamics and Vibrations lab attended the Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCOE) Review held at Atheron Hotel near Penn State University. Together they presented on "Advanced Dynamic Modeling and Analysis of Rotorcraft Planetary Gears". This presentation consisted of parts prepared by three students: Nonlinear Dynamics of Planetary Gears by Cheon-Jae Bahk, Dynamics of Compound Planetary Gears by Yichao Guo, and Three-dimensional Considerations in Gear Dynamics by Tugan Eritenel.

Dr. Robert Parker honored as ASME 2008 Fellow

Mar 6, 2008: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has announced this year's fellows and Rob Parker, professor in mechanical engineering, is a 2008 honoree.

ASME selected Parker for his development of a major research program on the dynamics, vibration, and stability of mechanical systems with particular focus on high-speed machinery. His current work focuses on the dynamics of geared transmissions and axially moving media such as belt drives. This work examines fundamental problems at the boundary of academic research and industrial applications, adopting mathematical, computational and experimental approaches.

September 25th 2007: The new Dynamics and Vibrations Lab webpage is live!   Content will be added over the next few weeks.

10th ASME International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference

September 4-7, 2007:

Two Dynamics & Vibration lab Ph.D. students, Yichao Guo and Cheon-Jae Bahk presented papers at the 10th ASME International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Yichao offered presentations on Mesh Phasing Relations of General Compound Planetary Gears and Sensitivity of General Compound Planetary Gear Natural Frequencies and Vibration Modes to Model Parameters, while Cheon-Jae presented Nonlinear Dynamics of Planetary Gears With Equal Planet Spacing. Several graduated Dynamics lab members also made presentations.

Following the conference, Cheon-Jae begins an internship at Caterpillar in Peoria IL.

HGAP/MGAP Fixtures Arrive

July 2007: After months under construction at the Intra machine shop, the HGAP/MGAP fixtures for testing planetary gears have arrived in the lab. Tristan Erison and Andrew Del Donno installed the fixtures in the Planetary Test stand, and shakedown can now begin.

Fixtures installed on Planetary bedplate:
