Research
Dr. Kahraman is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of Gleason Gear and Power Transmission Laboratories, and the Gear Dynamics and Gear Noise Research Laboratory. He is the chairman of the ASME Power Transmission and Gearing Committee and the Chairman of the ASME 10th International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference, which will be held in September 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. Kahraman's research group focuses on issues associated with power transmission and gearing. Research projects aim at bringing a fundamental understanding to the behavior of gear systems and drive train components commonly used in automotive, aerospace, rotorcraft, off-highway and industrial applications. Several aspects of gear and power transmission systems are investigated in these projects, including dynamics and vibration modeling of gear systems, gear and transmission efficiency, engineered surfaces, gear tribology and wear, contact and bending fatigue modeling, gear design and analysis, measurement and metrology, and hypoid gearing.
Dr. Kahraman has nearly 10 years of industrial gear and transmission research experience (1990-1999), while working as a senior researcher and later as an engineering manager for General Motors Powertrain Group.
Dr. Kahraman's research group has been sponsored by a gear research consortium of more than 45 industrial companies, and through individually sponsored projects by a number of agencies and companies, including NASA, Army Research, OAI, Bell Helicopter, Sikorsky, Boeing, GM, Borg Warner, American Axle and Manufacturing, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and Mazda.
