  • Able to extensively evaluate potential employment by being exposed to students over 6-month period.

  • Provide the resources for a continuous effort on an existing non-urgent long-term issue.

Is there a cost associated with industry participation/sponsorship?
A nominal fee will be charged for each sponsored project. The fee is $6000 for course fee and $4000 for project expenses (total of $10,000). The course fee pays for the department resources (faculty advisor, course staff, student machine shop and electronics shop). The project expenses cover mostly prototype fabrication cost and travel expenses for students.

What is the timeframe of the project?
The capstone design course series is a 3-quarter sequence. However, the first quarter consists of more lectures on design and introduction to each design problem statement. The effective design effort will be made in the second and third quarter of the sequence.

What would be an ideal project for the capstone course?
  • Open to student creativity and a fresh approach to solutions

  • Having a well defined metric of goals but at the same time having open-ended solutions.

  • Include comparison of analysis to experimental results

  • Physical hardware, either provided or student created

  • Include the effect of variability in the study

  • Expectations are at the level of a senior engineering student

What kind of involvement is expected from industry during the project?
The industry will appoint an engineer as a contact person for the project. This person will contribute to the project in giving domain specific knowledge as well as giving advice in design reviews. Practically speaking, we would like to try bi-weekly teleconference with student teams.
