Mission Statement

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program is to educate Master’s and Doctoral degree students through coursework, research, and participation in the development of innovative solutions to problems in mechanical engineering. The Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program will enable its graduates to become leaders in their discipline and provide technological and societal advancement through fundamental and applied research in science and engineering.

Current Student News

  • Non-technical Career/Professional Development Seminar hosted by MEGA - MEGA will be sponsoring a special seminar titled "Careers in Academia" on July 15th at 4 p.m. and those who are interested are welcome to attend. Professor Bob Gustafson from the College of Engineering will be speaking. Location TBD.
  • Qualifying Exam Guide now online - The Qualifying Exam guide for the current year is now posted online and can be located here.
  • Join the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student Group on Facebook! In an effort to help both new and current students interact outside of the classroom, we have set up a group on Facebook specifically for ME Graduate students. Look for "Ohio State Mechanical Engineering Graduate Students" in the groups area of Facebook and request to be added.

Fall Quarter Course Updates

  • ME 727 - Applications of Jet Propulsion Faculty: Mike Dunn - seats have been saved for Grad Students.  If you are interested in scheduling the course, please email Janeen at sands.3@osu.edu to enroll.
    • Course description: Characteristics and performance of air breathing flight vehicle power plants and their components.  Pre req: 510 or permission of instructor.
    • Class # 15687
    • Days: Monday and Wednesday
    • Time:  1:30PM - 3:1
  • ME 794 - Gas Turbine Combustion Faculty: Larry Kennedy
    • Course description:  This course is focused on the combustion aspects of gas turbines. It will provide basic combustion requirements for the design of combustors and their configuration necessary for efficiency and low emissions. Basic combustion fundamentals, ignition, flame stabilization and efficiency will be covered. Also the fluid mechanics associated with combustor cans, including fuel/air mixing will be discussed. Attention will be given to examining fuels used in gas turbines plus control of emissions.  Pre req: Graduate standing in engineering or permission of instructor.
    • Class # 28426
    • Days: Monday and Wednesday
    • Time: 3:30 - 5:00
  • ME 894 - Automotive System Control  Faculty: Junmin Wang
    • Course description:  This course aims at introducing the control system design for current automotive systemsincluding engines and vehicles. To meet the ever-growing demands on energy efficiency, emissions, safety, and comfort, automotive control systems are evolving very fast withsubstantial growth in complexity. Automotive systems, as nonlinear multi-input-multi-outputsystems, often feature significant un-modeled dynamics and parametric uncertainties. Therefore, design of automotive control systems require systematic combinations of understanding ofautomotive system characteristics and advanced control theory.  Pre req: ME 873 or EE 750, or instructor's permission
    • Class # 28428
    • Days: Tuesday and  Thursday
    • Time: 2:00PM - 3:18PM
  • ME 888 and 888R
