The department was founded in 1881 and for over 100 years has been recognized for the quality of its academic and research programs. In addition to the BS degree, the department offers graduate programs at the master of science and doctorate levels in both mechanical and nuclear engineering. The department's state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation provide the support tools for comprehensive educational and research activities. These are supplemented by specialized university research facilities. Our faculty have received numerous national awards for both research and teaching. Our graduates have been very successful and have risen to distinguished positions in industry, government and academia. It is the only department in the state of Ohio to be the recipient of all the Ohio Board of Regents Selective Excellence Awards: the Academic Challenge (1988), the Program Excellence (1984 and 1987) and the Ohio Eminent Scholar (1987). The department participates yearly in the Research Challenge awards.
The department awards about 15 percent of the doctoral, master's and baccalaureate degrees in the College of Engineering.
In addition to being a major participant in the University and College Institutes and Centers, the department operates Absorption Laboratory, Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory, Advanced Optical Diagnostic Laboratory, Bioacoustics, Ultrasonics & Fiber Optics Measurement Systems Laboratory, Center for Automotive Research, Combustion Laboratory, Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Computer Microtribology & Contamination Laboratory, Concurrent Engineering Laboratory, Controls Laboratory, Coordinate Metrology and Measurement Laboratory, Dynamics & Vibration Laboratory, Gas Dynamics Laboratory, Gear Dynamics and Gear Noise Research Laboratory, Heat & Mass Transfer Laboratory, Intelligent Structures and Systems Laboratory, Mechatronic Systems Laboratory, Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics Laboratory, Nuclear Reactor Laboratory, Nuclear Technology Laboratory, Optical Access Engine Laboratory, Powertrain Control & Diagnostics Laboratory.
